M.I.A. vs. The New York Times – Round 2 – UPDATED

Phase 1 - RetaliTWEETian complete. Now onto Phase 2 - Blog about it.

M.I.A. has posted raw audio of the interview with New York Times journalist Lynn Hirshberg that concerns two of the most retweeted portions of the flame war originating interview – M.I.A.’s appearance at the Grammy’s and of course…the infamous truffle flavored French fries.  Not only that, but there’s also a new song posted that seems to be about the incident, at least partially.

More about the ongoing saga of she said/she said below.

Straight Outta Late Night Warm-Up – The Roots & Ice Cube

Back when the phrase "Are We There Yet?" had more of a Malcolm X feel to it.

Questlove, drummer/bandleader extraordinaire of The Roots has posted to his SwiftFM account audio of the band performing N.W.A.’s seminal “Straight Outta Compton” with Ice Cube.  This is apparently during the band’s warm-up set before the taping of that night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Ice Cube handles his old part, Black Thought does MC Ren’s part and Roots guitarist Capt. Kirk surprises everyone by straight killing Eazy-E’s part.

Check it out below the jump.

M.I.A. vs. The New York Times

Oh M.I.A....how we used to love you.

On Tuesday, The New York Times ran an 8000 word profile on M.I.A. that focused on the many contradictions of the world famous singer/rapper/provocateur.  The NYT reporter (Lynn Hirschberg) took a few cheap (albeit masterfully executed) shots* in the piece.

M.I.A. responded by Tweeting the reporter’s cell phone number as if it were her own, encouraging her fans to call her to discuss the article.  This however may backfire on M.I.A. though as it’s how we found out about the Times piece.  Celebrity Tweet reports are all the rage on the internet, so I can only imagine how many additional hundreds of thousands of people will now read the article.

Links to the original story and our take on it below.

Panic Strikes a Chord @ The Bishop

PSAC

Last night (May 25, 2010) Panic Strikes a Chord opened up for Besnard Lakes and Burnt Ones at The Bishop, and once again demonstrated why this long running Bloomington, IN band deserves a fresh look.  The musical vision of Jeremy Brightbill, the group has shifted from it’s lo-fi Bedhead-esque experimental singer-songwriter origins to a swaggering mash-up of the best of 90’s alt-rock.  From that period’s awkward gangly jangle of Merge’s catalog to the superglue the amps to 11 bombast of Sub Pop, Panic makes the connection seamlessly and naturally, sounding familiar and fresh at the same time.  When the indie rock world (and for that matter the pop world) wring out the last drop of 80s nostalgia and are ready to move onward to appreciating the 90s unironically, they’ll find their new favorite band in Panic Strikes a Chord.

Frank Turner Wants You B-Side Him.

Care to meet me half-way? Photo by danh_photos

British folk-punk troubadour Frank Turner is putting his mouth where his vinyl is.  The B-Side of his latest Epitaph Records single, “Try This At Home”, is up for grabs for some lucky unknown band.  “Try This…” is a rallying cry for a new generation to pick up instruments and tell their own stories, so this contest is a nice extension of that.  Details here.

Good luck to all the artists who enter, and an inside tip – Frank loves ABBA (seriously), so if you can Swede up your entry you just might win.

Frank just finished touring in China (what?) and apparently has no plans of slowing down.  Full world hopping tour dates below.
