Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Recordsreturns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.
Today Virgil gives us an overview of the beers shared at his monthly poker game, so get ready to learn a lot all at once.
Our pal Frank Turner(who has a new album coming out June 6th that we’re very excited about btw) played the Knitting Factory last night and it was live streamed on the internet. Now generally we don’t encourage living in the past, but in case you missed it you can still watch it by going right here.
Frank’s tour continues on and on, check the dates below to see if he’s coming to your hood, although a ton of these shows are sold out – so you’ll have to look super cute and chat up the door guy to get in.
It was this day in 1967 that boxing champion Muhammad Ali refuses to be inducted into the U.S. Army and was immediately stripped of his heavyweight title. Ali, a Muslim, cited religious reasons for his decision to forgo military service. We pay musical tribute with our other favorite Ali. Check it below.
Today we talk to Fred Foster – songwriter, producer and founder of Monument Records about his work with Roy Orbison, whose The Monument Singles Collection was released this Tuesday.
Our pals over at History.com let us know that it was this day in 4977 B.C., that the universe was created. At least according to German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, considered a founder of modern science.
Now I’m sure there are political opponents to the universe who would demand to see the birth certificate, but seems as good a day as any to celebrate, no? Check out the rest of Kepler’s story and some musical tributes to the universe below. Some awesome, some funny and some something else. We highly recommend checking out the first one at least. You’ll see what we’re talking about.
We posted on Blitz the Ambassador a few weeks back when he offered a free track from his upcoming album Native Sun. Well this time, you can stream the album in it’s entirety one full week before the release and watch footage director Terence Nance filmed while they were shooting the short film of the same name, as well as some amazing stock footage of Africa. Check it out below.
Our good friend Jason Sheeley runs The Hillbilly Beast, and on occasion we’re going to let you know about his most recent musical musing and super cool song pick.
As stoked as we usually are to hear what Jason is digging on, today’s re-post is especially sweet, not just because the song “Sorry You’re Sick” by Ted Hawkins is a great song (which it is) but also because it reminds us of our pal Langhorne Slim, who on occasion would segue way into it from one of his own songs live. Check it out over at The Beast.
It was this day in 1917 that the legendary Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, VA. Check out History.com‘s bio of Ella and a few of our favorite videos of her performing below.
The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.
Today’s challenger gives it the late 80’s Manchester alternative rock treatment.
