Tuesday Tip-Off: Ninja Gun

Today’s tip-off is the latest EP from our favorite sons of Georgia, the melodic rock band Ninja Gun.

Ninja Gun has long been one of our favorite anomalies in the current underground scene. Despite regularly touring with bands who come from the punk world like Against Me! and The Gaslight Anthem, Ninja Gun have always delivered a brand of southern rock that never sacrificed melody and pop smarts, and in fact often put them at the forefront.  The closest go to for comparison is Tom Petty, but that has less to do with the overall sound as it does for the quality of songwriting.  Like Petty, they strike a perfect balance of common man and poet with their songs and wrap them in the kind of fully realized melodies that make them a favorite of all kinds of audiences, no matter what genre allegiance they usually swear to.

The new EP Roman Nose doesn’t have any instant classics that grab you as immediately as previous songs like “Restless Rubes” or “Darwin Was a Baptist”, but that doesn’t make it any less compelling. RN explores a softer more lush side of their sound and is a far more rewarding headphones listen.  If this is a new direction for the band, then we are definitely intrigued to see what they can do with a full length of these kinds of subtle ups and downs in mood and tone, which is what will keep us coming back to these songs for a while, just to see what new things we’ll hear next time around.

You can get your copy from Sabot Productions here, or from one of these upcoming shows.
