Various Re-Post-ions

Our good friend Jason Sheeley runs The Hillbilly Beast, and on occasion we’re going to let you know about his most recent musical musing and super cool song pick.

As usual, Jason has turned us onto another hidden classic, this time “Straight Tears” by Paul Burch.  Check it and an amusing story of mistaken identity over at the Beast, found here.

Where the Bus Pass Took Us

While homebodies by nature, we do regularly muster the single malt courage to go out into the world and experience music in the flesh, and we document these excursions in Where the Bus Pass Took Us.

Last night we found ourselves back at Bloomington’s best venue, The Bishop, for another night of rock and roll via the Panic Strikes a Chord album release party – with Throwing Stars and Hard Candy Hearts.  We grabbed video of all three bands for your enjoyment, check them out below.

Where the Internet Took Us

Our buddies Gaslight Anthem have a new video for the song “Bring It On” which if we’re not mistaken, features Dave Hause of The Loved Ones in one of the principal roles. Check it out above, and while you’re at it check out all of our related Gaslight Anthem articles, including our interview with drummer Benny Horowitz here.

Where the Bus Pass Took Us

While homebodies by nature, we do regularly muster the single malt courage to go out into the world and experience music in the flesh, and we document these excursions in Where the Bus Pass Took Us.

Last night we caught Brooklyn’s The Woes, along with local stalwart Sam Lowry, as they came through town to The Bishop. Our camera was not as charged as we thought it was and so after shooting a couple of songs from the Lowry set we were only able to get one from The Woes, but we still wanted to share. Check them out below.

Where The Internet Took Us

For those followers of the blog who live outside of the greater Bloomington area – we urge you all to check out our friends The Hollows via live interweb streaming as they appear tonight on WFHB’s “Local Live” program. The band will perform 6 songs, mostly from their upcoming EP, and chat a bit with the DJ from 9:30pm to 10:00pm EST.

You can check out that stream right here, and for those of you in the greater Bloomington area who want to listen on your totally sweet hi-fi Kenwood system from the 70’s with dual-band radio receiver, you can tune in to 98.1FM or 91.3FM. Pre-game in style by checking out The Hollows excellent first album Darlings of Naught here, and all of our Hollows related content (including an interview with main Hollow Kate Long) right here.

Where The Internet Takes You

Today is Postcard Elba‘s one year anniversary/birthday thingy. Thanks for your patronage, it is appreciated and noticed. We’ve been slowly but steadily growing in hits each month and that is awesome. If you want to do something nice for us on this special occasion you can do two things. One – take some time to do some exploring of our backpages, there’s some gold back there that not a lot of people have seen because they posted back before anyone knew we existed; and two – spread the word to your friends and frienemies and get them into the PE.

The Gloria Jones Challenge – Round 19

The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.

Today’s challenger gives the song the 3rd wave ska treatment.

This Day in Music History (Sort Of) – Nicole & Jason Evans Groth on Bonnie & Clyde

It was this day in 1934 that notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, Louisiana. We asked our favorite partners in crime, Nicole and Jason Evans Groth from the band Whippoorwill to tell us about some of their favorite rock & roll outlaw couples.
