Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.
Today’s pick is Shiner Ruby Redbird.
This week, I bring you Spoetzel Brewery’s Shiner Ruby Redbird, a Seasonal Summer Beer. I was just thinking the other day that I continue to write about double IPAs, Russian Imperial Stouts, and Barley Wines, and thought it might be time to write about something different. I went into my neighborhood beer store (Highland Liquor) and as I always do, I asked them if they had anything new and interesting. The first answer was a new beer from Shiner brewed with Grapefruit and Ginger. I said, sign me up, much to his astonishment. He knows the types of beers I usually go for and he was half joking when he suggested it. Knowing that I wanted something different, I figured this was about as different as it gets. I also love grapefruit, it’s probably my favorite fruit. When popping open the bottle, the smell of grapefruit is all you can smell. The beer pours a slightly redish amber not unlike what a glass of bourbon might look like. As the beer hits your lips, grapefruit and ginger overpowers your taste buds. It’s a lighter beer clocking in at about 4 percent. I’m surprised that I like the beer so much. It’s refreshing. As advertised, it’s a great cold beer on a hot day. I think this beer would polarize most beer drinkers, but if the idea of grapefruit and ginger in your beer sounds good, this could be your beer of choice this summer.
Contest: Like I’ve done before, I offer up a contest whereby you guess what pint glass is in the photo next to the Spoetzel Brewery’s Shiner Ruby Redbird. Correctly guess the glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to postcardeditor@gmail.com. One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
If you want to send me beer for a future review, my address is 2000 Wadsworth Blvd #138, Lakewood, CO 80214.
