Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Recordsreturns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.
This week’s pick is the Dubhe Imperial Black IPA from Uinta Brewing Company.
This week, I bring you Uinta Brewing Company’s Dubhe Imperial Black IPA (brewed with hemp seed hence the name Dubhe, pronounced doobie). Uinta is a brewery based in Salt Lake City, Utah. At 9.2 ABV, Dubhe stands apart from 90 percent of the beers in that state. I just wish I knew about this brewery when I had to visit Utah 4 times to get things at Ikea over the course of a year (we won’t have an Ikea in Denver until fall of 2011). Each of those 4 times, I could only find 3.2 beer and as a craft beer lover, it was pretty depressing. Had I known about Uinta brewing was around, I would have had the opportunity to enjoy delicious beers like this one. Black IPAs seem to be the flavor of the month, but a delicious beer is a delicious beer. The beer smells slightly hoppy and sweet. The beer pours dark, almost black with hints of red. Dubhe is very drinkable considering how strong it is. The hops are way out front, but it isn’t extremely hoppy. The malt and hemp seed really balances this one out. I recommend this one for the hophead as well as those that are not quite there. It’s a tasty beer.
Contest: Like I’ve done before, I offer up a contest whereby you guess what pint glass is in the photo next to the Uinta Brewing Company’s Dubhe Imperial Black IPA. Correctly guess the glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to postcardeditor@gmail.com. One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
If you want to send me beer for a future review, my address is 2000 Wadsworth Blvd #138, Lakewood, CO 80214.
