Virgil’s Beer of the Week

Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.

This week Virgil talks about Great Divide’s seasonal beer Colette Farmhouse.

This week, I bring you the Colette Farmhouse Ale by Great Divide. This is one of several seasonal beers by one of my favorite breweries in Colorado. And of their seasonal beers, I think that Colette might be my favorite. While I don’t have a ton of experience with Farmhouse/Saison style beers, the limited number I have had, this one really stands out. The beer smells a lot like a wheat beer with some citrus/lemon characteristics. Colette is usually released March/April and is usually gone by the official start of summer. While I’m not likely to ever say a bad word about Great Divide, I think this might be one of their biggest missteps. To me, Colette embodies the perfect summer beer. It’s refreshing, it’s delicious, it has whatever that it factor is that makes a beer absolutely perfect on a hot summer day. At 7.3 percent ABV, it’s a lot stronger than other summer beers. There was a time when wheat beers and hefeweizens were my favorite beers but after a while, I really burnt out on those styles. To me, Colette has some of my favorite characteristics of a good wheat beer, but it has so much more going on. I visit Great Divide’s tap room often and this is always the beer I start with. I almost wish they canned this beer because it would be perfect for a summer barbecue. I recommend you try this beer before it is gone til next year.

Contest: Like I’ve done before, I offer up a contest whereby you guess what pint glass is in the photo next to the Great Divide Colette Farmhouse Ale. Correctly guess the glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
