Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.
This week Virgil discusses Cafe Negro from Bridgeport Brewery.
This week, I bring you the Bridgeport’s Cafe Negro (Coffee Infused Porter). I tend to find myself interested in most beers that happen to infuse coffee or espresso. I guess I like the idea of having caffeine in my beer. I’ve often wondered just how much caffeine a coffee infused beer has. If anyone knows, please share what you know. Think of one of those nights where you’ve had enough to drink and you start getting sleepy; if you knew that beers like this had decent amount of caffeine, you could drink a few to keep the night going. As one might suspect, this beer smells of coffee, cocoa, and malt. The first sip is really smooth, you taste the coffee, you taste the porter, but it is all really well balanced. The beer is creamy not unlike a Guinness. At 5.5 percent alcohol, this is a pretty mellow beer. Consistent with the low ABV, the beer itself is pretty mild. It’s got good flavor and is definitely worth trying. Recommended.
Last Week’s Contest: We had an interesting one last week with a subjective question – asking the contestant to name the state the Rogue brewery is in and something else (band, record store, etc…) awesome from that state. We had a lot of great answers, but the winner was Chris who pointed out that Oregon is also home to the pop-punk goodness of Broadway Calls, who happen to have a song called “Back to Oregon” which we have included in video form below.
This Week’s Contest: Like I’ve done before, I offer up a contest whereby you guess what pint glass is in the photo next to the Bridgeport’s Cafe Negro. Correctly guess the glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to postcardeditor@gmail.com. One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
If you want to send me beer for a future review, my address is 2000 Wadsworth Blvd #138, Lakewood, CO 80214.
