Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.
This week, Virgil brings you Firestone Walker’s Double Jack Imperial IPA.
I decided to change things up a bit and visit my local pizzeria that specializes in fantastic beer, Hops and Pie. If you love craft beer and great pizza, this could become your favorite destination. I make it in there fairly regularly (I only live about 3 blocks away) and have gotten to know some of the staff. One waitress in particular knows that I am a hop head and whenever they get in a new IPA worth trying, she makes a point of telling me about it. Tonight, she suggested I try Firestone Walker’s Double Jack Imperial IPA. I took her up on her suggestion and got a 10 ounce poor of this delicious beer. Imperial/Double IPAs have become a pretty crowded beer style but when done right, you can’t go wrong. Double Jack Imperial IPA is up there with some of the best. When drinking it, I couldn’t help but think about another California brewery and their Pliny the Elder Imperial IPA. Double Jack has a huge hop profile, but it is very well balanced. At 9.5 percent ABV and 100 IBUs, this is a certainly a big beer. The waitress said that they were the only place in Colorado who carried this beer which makes a little bit of sense. From what I can remember, the only time I’ve had a Firestone Walker beer was when they collaborated with a brewery like Stone. While it’s a shame that their beers are not widely distributed in my state, I am really glad I got to have their double jack imperial IPA.
This Week’s Contest: The first person who can correctly name all of the breweries/beers listed in the above photo can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. If someone can’t identify all of the taps, one lucky winner will be drawn who has the most correct answers. Good Luck. Send your answers to postcardeditor@gmail.com. One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
If you want to send me beer for a future review, my address is 2000 Wadsworth Blvd #138, Lakewood, CO 80214.
