Virgil’s Beer of the Week

Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.

This week, Virgil brings you the Stone/Troegs/J&K collaborated Cherry Chocolate Stout.

I really love the collaborations that Stone has been releasing. I’ve enjoyed them all and think that the idea behind them are just absolutely amazing. When talking about these collaborations, I have compared them to 2 like-minded bands doing a split 7″, but I think I have a better musical analogy. It’s not unlike a huge band taking out 2 smaller bands on tour because that bigger band wants their fans to hear these other bands. With this collaboration, they actually took the winners of 2011’s Stone March Madness Homebrew Competition and brewed that beer on 120 barrel system. As a homebrewer, this has to be the ultimate wet dream. Out of the 40 contestants at Stone’s Homebrew Competition, Jason Fields & Kevin Sheppard won with their Cherry Chocolate Stout. Mitch Steele of Stone Brewing Co. enlisted Jon Trogner of Tröegs Brewing Company and of course Jason and Kevin to bring their award winning beer to the masses. How’s the beer you ask? It’s really great. When you smell the beer, you definitely pick up some of the cocoa and cherry you imagine you might pick up. The beer pours really dark black with very little carbonation. The beer has a creamy texture with a huge cherry profile. The cherry definitely comes out strong and pretty much overpowers the chocolate. The beer is a little bit sour due to the 9000 pounds of cherries used, you also get mild tastes of vanilla and cocoa. It’s a great beer worth picking up. I definitely salute Stone for exposing great breweries from around the world to all of us.

This Week’s Contest: Correctly identify the person on the pint glass and explain why he is important to both Colorado and Craft Beer and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
