Virgil’s Beer of the Week

Our good friend Virgil Dickerson from Suburban Home Records returns with another pick for our weekly segment known so beautifully and simply as: Virgil’s Beer of the Week.

This week, Virgil brings you Stone’s Belgo Anise Imperial Russian Stout.

This was a leftover bomber left in my fridge after my last poker night. I hadn’t realized when I opened it that this was an Anise flavored Russian Imperial Stout with a Belgian Yeast. One smell and later with my first taste, I knew that I was in for something completely different. I will be the first to admit that Anise is not my favorite spice. I never liked black licorice but I do like Jaeger which I believe has Anise in it. While you can definitely pick up on oak, cocoa, and coffee, the Anise overwhelms your taste buds.It reminds me of my only other experience with an Anise Russian Imperial Stout. During this past year’s Great Divide Anniversary Party, they had made a number of Yeti varieties, one of which  was an Anise and one of which was their Belgian Yeti. The Anise Yeti tasted like someone dropped a Jaeger shot into my Yeti (which is not a good thing). The Belgian Yeti is one of my new favorite beers of 2011. I think that the Belgo Anise Russian Imperial Stout fits somewhere in between those 2 beers. While I understand why a brewery might decide to go over the top with Anise, it’s an ingredient I hope never to find in a beer again. If you love Anise, this beer is worth trying. If you don’t, move on.

This Week’s Contest: Correctly identify the brewery responsible for this glass and you can win a record of your choice from Suburban Home Records. Good Luck. Send your answers to One lucky winner will be drawn at random from the correct guesses.
