Tuesday Tip-Off: Alana Amram & The Rough Gems

Today’s tip off is the beautiful Americana of Alana Amram & The Rough Gems.

Recommended to us by, and sharing a member with, one of our all time favorite bands The Woes – we couldn’t wait to check out Alana Amram & The Rough Gems album “Painted Lady.”  Little did we know that a hot tip would turn into one of our go to records in the past couple of months for soothing our late evening heartaches and early morning hangovers.  Alana’s voice has an almost perfect combination of weary, world traveled sorrow and sweet nostalgia.  It’s this quality that brings to mind, not Loretta or Patsy or any of the other trailblazing female country singers of yore, but rather that of Kris Kristofferson.  Sure, Amram’s got better pipes than Kristofferson ever did, but there’s a similar mojo working here, and it helps elevate her above the rest of the overly crowded pack of rodeo sweethearts.  She matches this mojo with equally impressive songwriting and a backing band that hits every note – musical and emotional – out of the park.  You can get a taste of what we’re talking about below, and by checking out the album here.

A few from the Stetson Center Stage series.
