The Gloria Jones Challenge – Round 26

The Gloria Jones Challenge is our ongoing examination of the many, many, many covers of Jones’ classic Northern Soul jam “Tainted Love” – to see how they stack up compared to the original.

Today’s challenger gives it the pop industrial treatment.

But first, as always, the original by which all challengers are ultimately judged.

Ad today’s challenger, EM.MA

Postcard ChaCha: Just the wait from the intro to the actual song was excruciating. In one sentence: Aphex Twin meets Britany Spears and it goes horribly, horribly wrong.

Postcard Editor: This is one of those that I know I should hate, but for whatever reason I don’t.  They are ripping off straight from NIN’s glory days as far as production, but just as the Marilyn Manson version sounded almost quaint and nostalgic, so does this.  Also the fact that at no point does the female singer, or anyone else in the band, feel the need to try and yell like Cookie Monster or sound eeeeeeevvvvuhhhhhl over the track goes a long way in my book.  Not great, but not awful.
