We Never Asked For This – School of Seven Bells

We Never Asked For This is our short review of a band who thought (or their label/manager/agent/girlfriend thought) that it would be a good idea to send us an email saying “like me! like me! like me!” (more or less).

Today’s unsolicited review is of “The Night”- the first single off of School of Seven Bells upcoming album Ghostory.

School of Seven Bells is a band whose name we’ve seen for a while but never got around to checking out, and like Mohammed we just chilled until that mountain came to us, in the form of the new single showing up in our inbox.  “The Night” is a pleasant enough song that mixes 80’s synth underground sounds with a more modern indie pop vibe.  While not sounding particularly like the Cocteau Twins, the wash of soothing electronic pop still reminds of an entire movement that seemed to be personified by that band. “The Night” is a fine song, but seems to be a bit one dimensional to us, and we’re surprised that it’s the single.  We’re hoping that this is a case similar to when Stars released “Ageless Beauty” as the single for Set Yourself On Fire – a straightforward and unremarkable pop song from an otherwise unbelievably moving and creative album.  We’re looking forward to Ghostory and hope it packs a similar surprise.  Check out “The Night” below and let us know what you think in the comments.
