We Never Asked For This is our short review of a band who thought (or their label/manager/agent/girlfriend thought) that it would be a good idea to send us an email saying “like me! like me! like me!” (more or less).
Today’s blind submission comes from power trio Band of Skulls, who tantalize us with a stream of the title track to their upcoming album Sweet Sour and the video for the album’s first single “The Devil Takes Care of His Own.” Check them both out and what we think below.
After checking out the fifth twangy and completely unremarkable roots act submission in a row filling up our inbox, these tracks from Band of Skulls were a breath of fresh air. Sweet, sweaty, gritty, sludgy, rock and roll air. There’s definitely a White Stripes vibe here, which I’m sure they get all the time, with minimalist but huge riffs – but there’s also an approach to melody that recalls the Queens of the Stone Age at their best. It’s two tracks that have us more than excited for the full album’s release on February 21st. We just hope a few more songs come our way in the meantime to hold us over.
Here’s the title track.
And the video for the first single, which while rocking, sadly just reinforces the stereotype that all Asians work in the telecommunications field.
