Mike’s ‘Mericana Monday – Pacific Range

Mike’s ‘Mericana Mondays is where friend of the blog, roots DJ, house show organizer, Bloomington Music Expo czar and all around nice guy Mike McAfee picks one song a week to share with the people.

Pacific Range‘s latest record, High Upon The Mountain, has been perched at #1 on my pandemic listening chart for a few weeks now. These tunes take me away to a California desert or beach listening to Ed’s mixtape of the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and New Riders Of The Purple Sage on a Realistic Jambox.

Fasman’s Finds – Hiroshi Yoshimura

Fasman’s Finds is our new column from Rebecca Fasman (intrepid record nerd, DJ, and curator at the Kinsey Institute) in which she shares what she’s listening to and why.

Did you know that digestion involves NINE organs? Did you also know that anxiety can hinder digestion? It’s Thanksgiving week, and I was contemplating posting one of my favorite songs about food for this holiday offering, but I couldn’t decide between “Ham ‘N’ Eggs” by A Tribe Called Quest and every/any song on MM…FOOD by MF Doom. And then I realized that the majority of the holiday isn’t actually spent eating, but digesting. Your body is going to be working HARD. So this week I am including a song from one of my favorite albums of all time, which Light in the Attic just rereleased, called Green by Hiroshi Yoshimura. This album is perfect in every way. Put this track on (but really listen to the whole album), recline somewhere, relax, take deep breaths, and be nice to your body while it turns the delicious food you just ate into poop. (For real though, I do hope that everyone stays safe and healthy this week.)

The Midweekly – IDLES

The Midweekly is our column from Mike Jeffers; lead singer of Chicago punk stalwarts SCRAMmusic junkie and all around righteous dude.

This is chanting from a bullhorn music. The stomping of feet as they march in the streets music. This is Ultra Mono, the new record from post-punk bombardment IDLES. Like all good protest rockers, their frustration is forefront, and like all smart protest rockers, they know it’s useless without encouragement. That positive push towards empathy and inspiration. And it’s in full throated verse and chorus here. Track after track, the music drives a plow of noise, building up mounds of such intensity, that when the occasional pop hook breaks in, it’ll have you jumping out of your trousers. It’s hard to think of a single album this year that has made me long more for flailing wildly in a sweaty, crowded club with like minded folks, all respecting each others’ dance space.

Various Re-post-ions: Two Minutes to Late Night (again)

We try not to shine the light on the same sight over and over again, but Two Minutes to Late Night is just that good. Also this week’s cover includes long time friend of the blog Adam Turla from Murder by Death (along with members of My Chemical Romance, Distillers, Thursday and Soul Glo) covering an Annie Lennox classic, so you know we have to share the love.

This Day In Music History

Today is Jim Yester of The Association‘s birthday. The late 60’s sunshine pop group had a string of hits including “Windy,” “Cherish,” and “Along Comes Mary,” but our favorite has always been their perfectly dreamy version of the Addrisi Brothers song “Never My Love.” Happy Birthday Jim, thanks for the tunes.

Tuesday Tip-Off: Billie Eilish

We know that we don’t normally talk about mainstream pop, but we also recognize when respect is due. Not only do we unabashedly love Billie Eilish‘s music (including this new banger) but we also love her sense of humor, subversive attitude and swagger. Some scumbags on the internet making comments about how much weight you’ve gained? Make a music video of you running around a mall stealing food while singing “Get my pretty name out of your mouth.” It’s every bit as punk rock as when Joe Talbot of IDLES sings “I want to cater for my haters…eat shit” and we (hand clap) are (hand clap) here (hand clap) for (hand clap) it.

Mike’s ‘Mericana Monday – John Calvin Abney

Mike’s ‘Mericana Mondays is where friend of the blog, roots DJ, house show organizer, Bloomington Music Expo czar and all around nice guy Mike McAfee picks one song a week to share with the people.

John Calvin Abney‘s new release, Familiar Ground (Black Mesa Records), is his latest contribution to the great Tulsa sound. Whenever I hear John Calvin Abney, I’m just sure he must have been conceived while his parents listened to both Leon Russell & The Shelter People and Troubadour.
