After a 20 year hiatus, English alternative band Departure Lounge have reunited and sound as good as ever – particularly on “Australia” the second single from their new album Transmeridian. Of course it’s easy to sound good when you bring in Peter Buck to lay down his signature guitar sound, but the song is more than just a scratch for that R.E.M. itch in your life. It’s a glorious piece of mid-tempo moody cool that stands with the very best of left of the dial college rock. If you missed them the first time around, allow this to be an introduction to one of the lesser known greats of the era and an impetus to check out their old albums Out of Here, Jetlag Dreams and Too Late To Die Young.
