Tuesday Tip-Off: Pop Zeus

It’s been six years since we lost Mikey Hodges in a motorcycle accident, and for those who knew him that’s been six years without receiving one of his world famous bear hugs. Some people fill every room they enter with their light and energy, and Mikey was one. Since his passing his friends have been able to keep his memory alive via stories of epic Mikey-ness (Editor’s personal favorite is the night of the homemade indoor apartment hallway slip n’ slide) and by sharing the music from his lo-fi bedroom pop project Pop Zeus. Lucky for us, twosyllable records in conjunction with Mikey’s sister Whitney Hodges have curated a collection of unreleased material called This Doesn’t Feel Like Home (Unreleased Demos 2011-2014), out March 5, 2021, days before what would have been Mikey’s 36th birthday.

The album is available for pre-order now and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Michael T Hodges Instrument Endowment Fund which supplies instruments to students in Lebanon, IN. You can hear the first single “Foolish” below, a perfect example of Pop Zeus’ combination of Big Star style power pop as filtered through Guided By Voices sensibilities.
