Wordless Wednesdays

Wordless Wednesdays is our new weekly column where we spotlight the best new instrumental tracks.

Sometimes silence truly is golden, especially the verbal kind. Dig the 24kt gold that is the outstanding new instrumental tracks from MAYSUN and Lemonship after the jump.

While it is somewhat counterintuitive to spill a bunch of words about an instrumental track that is designed to be experienced more than analyzed, it is the job we signed up for and so…Canada’s MAYSUN gives us sci-fi vibes on “An Opening,” and as sci-fi fans (we miss you The Expanse) we mean that as high praise. With a percolating, atmospheric synth acting as a through line pads build tension and expand the melody until a rhythm track emerges, like muffled machinery threatening to break loose, getting louder and louder implying….ominousness? Opportunity? An opening can be many different things to different people, and the song “An Opening” captures that energy and potential perfectly.

Portland, Oregon’s Lemonship brings us a whole other flavor of instrumental on “Captain Möbius.” The trio (Jeff Hayes on guitar, Sam Newson on keyboards, and Matthew Pharris on percussion) find a spacey and spacious, experimental jazz groove to explore. As the old adage goes, it’s the notes you don’t play, and Lemonship wisely keep the noodling tasty and restrained with a masterful ear for composition and arrangement, allowing each player to both shine and support. It’s heady, yet natural feeling, and is what every late night after hours jam session is striving for.
