Some songs start so strongly and catch us so immediately that we can’t help but think “oh please don’t fuck this up.” We’re happy to say that at no point in “Black Dog” does Jill Lorean fuck it up, which is saying something as it’s a somewhat epic song (mini-epic?) clocking in at 6:22. Happily, the excitement and intrigue we felt from the opening string part and flat eq’d drums carries throughout. What follows is a driving but minimalist indie rocker with shades and angles that reveal themselves as the song progresses, never losing the main melody/vibe but instead expanding it in inventive yet natural ways. It’s a bop and a wonderfully creative one at that.
