Week Starter – Fire Ant Season

Week Starter is our Monday column where we give you a new song to help you get on out of bed & help you power on through the working week.

“All pain hurts the same” might philosophically be true, but there’s no denying that the existential malaise that many people feel is, perhaps, not quite the same as trying to emotionally (and quite literally) survive a military invasion of your homeland or sleeping on the streets of (checks notes) the “greatest nation on Earth.” Luckily, folk punkers Fire Ant Season are here to remind us to check ourselves before we wreck ourselves with the “Privilege Blues.” Not only is it a good daily affirmation to call yourself on your bullshit, but it’s a catchy little number with an unexpected synth solo that helps make this already charming number a sure thing for your next PMA playlist.

Mike’s Monday Muse – Beverly Guitar Watkins

Mike’s Monday Muse is where friend of the blog, roots DJ, house show organizer, Bloomington Music Expo czar and all around nice guy Mike McAfee picks one song a week to share with the people.

Beverly Guitar Watkins was eight years old in 1947 when she taught herself to play “John Henry” on a Stella guitar bought from Sears Roebuck. She won a talent show playing “Blue Suede Shoes” on that Stella in high school where she also learned to play piano, bass, and trumpet. In Paris is a new release of a 2012 live show out now on Music Maker Foundation. She sleighs covers of “You Send Me” and “What I Say” on the album and two songs, “Red Mama” and “Sugar Baby Swing,” are named after her guitars.
