Today we have not one, not two, but three instrumental tracks for you to enjoy (read in Sesame Street’s The Count voice for seasonal appropriateness). Check out the latest from Micah Frank & Chet Doxas, whoiswelanski and Sic Wip after the jump.

First up we have “Silva Ignis” from Micah Frank and Chet Doxas. It’s a soundscape built on a slowed down and blurred analogue tape loop (or sounds like one) not unlike what you might find as an interstitial on a Sparklehorse album. Minimalist chimes and piano tinkle in and out giving the track a sense of movement and form, but like a fading dream you’re not sure where its headed or how long the shape of things will last.

Next up we have “First, Try” by whoiswelanski. Gotta love any song title that sounds like something our therapist would say to us. This one starts off with a repetitive piano piece that moves from foreground to background as additional elements are introduced, and oh what elements they are. Classic 80’s sci-fi synths meet a skittering beat to create a feeling a bit like Radiohead dipping their toe into future funk. Is it funky? No. It’s somewhat ominous and brooding, but it has the shades of funk. It’s a fun combination.

And finally we have Sic Wip with their song “Classic Cult.” A two piece, drums and guitar (and a healthy dose of guitar pedals), the duo create a wonderfully grooving slice of math rock with this one and show how much mileage you can get out of variations on a riff. People always think of shredding as blistering solos or insanely fast drum solos, but this is shredding of another nature. Both band members stay in the pocket but repeatedly throw heat and recede over and over again like solar flares erupting from the sun. Math rock / post rock is nothing if not all about the nuances, and Sic Wip nail the assignment.
