The Midweekly – IDLES

The Midweekly is our column from Mike Jeffers; lead singer of Chicago punk stalwarts SCRAMmusic junkie and all around righteous dude.

This is chanting from a bullhorn music. The stomping of feet as they march in the streets music. This is Ultra Mono, the new record from post-punk bombardment IDLES. Like all good protest rockers, their frustration is forefront, and like all smart protest rockers, they know it’s useless without encouragement. That positive push towards empathy and inspiration. And it’s in full throated verse and chorus here. Track after track, the music drives a plow of noise, building up mounds of such intensity, that when the occasional pop hook breaks in, it’ll have you jumping out of your trousers. It’s hard to think of a single album this year that has made me long more for flailing wildly in a sweaty, crowded club with like minded folks, all respecting each others’ dance space.

Tuesday Tip-Off: Billie Eilish

We know that we don’t normally talk about mainstream pop, but we also recognize when respect is due. Not only do we unabashedly love Billie Eilish‘s music (including this new banger) but we also love her sense of humor, subversive attitude and swagger. Some scumbags on the internet making comments about how much weight you’ve gained? Make a music video of you running around a mall stealing food while singing “Get my pretty name out of your mouth.” It’s every bit as punk rock as when Joe Talbot of IDLES sings “I want to cater for my haters…eat shit” and we (hand clap) are (hand clap) here (hand clap) for (hand clap) it.

Where the Internet Took Us

IDLES is one of our favorite bands that we discovered while the blog was in hiatus. We could’ve easily done a While We Were Sleeping post about them (and may still do one because we definitely love them enough to keep posting about them) but we’re kicking off our week by cranking their Live at Abbey Road session that dropped last night. Who needs coffee when you have banging versions of the best songs from their back catalogue and first listens of tracks off their upcoming album Ultra Mono including this absolute ripper “War.”

Full set here. Ultra Mono is due out September 25th on Partisan Records and is available for pre-order here.
