The Midweekly – Junglepussy

The Midweekly is our column from Mike Jeffers; lead singer of Chicago punk stalwarts SCRAMmusic junkie and all around righteous dude.

In the rap game Junglepussy has never been afraid to push boundaries beyond the conventional. This Brooklyn queen keeps doing exactly that with JP5000, her latest EP. Even though it’s split into five tracks, it feels more like one, long composition. Each beat segues into the next seamlessly, and though these tracks are linked like a continuous thread, the music itself staggers and stutters with odd rhythm. You might be surprised to know four different producers helped accomplish the sound on this 11 minute record. JP keeps the vocals low in tone, somewhat subdued, though the dominance of her lyrics still remain. Verses about confidence in the face of criticism, an industry and culture that pits artists against other through jealousy, and the solidarity to fight back. A couple of times she dips into the realm of relationships. First, reminiscing on foolish youth and heartbreak, then back to the present and a blossoming new love. With no choruses it feels more like a stream of consciousness, although no line is frivolous, everything is poignant. Let’s just leave it in her own words: “I’m on top of the mountain, meditating topless, I transcend.”

The B-Side: Big Bailey & Bugsy Calhoun

Can’t think of a better day of the week to drop “B.I.G.” by Big Bailey (featuring Bugsy Calhoun) as it is a throwback of the highest quality. If you are, like us, not a fan of emo-hop, cloud-hop and the rest of the current sub-genres of hip-hop and long for the days when rap was real than this is the song for you. It seems odd to want to describe a hip-hop track as “charming” but fuck it, this shit is charming as hell. We are charmed. Two talented mc’s spitting rhymes over a dope old school track in the purest way possible feels not so much nostalgic as it does necessary. Turn this up, bob ya head and have faith that real hip-hop is forever.

Week Ender – Dust Raps The Blues

The Omega to the Week Starter Alpha, Week Ender is the song we want to send you swaggering into the weekend with.

Ooooh this is that good shit. That good shit you probably need after another week of global uncertainty mixed with the good old fashioned day to day hassle that is being alive. But as Dust Raps The Blues reminds us, sometimes you gotta embody being alive with some serious attitude and defiance. “I’m Alive” is a mix of classic battle rapper boasting and vulnerability that brings to mind the great Brother Ali, which is amplified by the production that has a similar vibe to the work of Ant who produced the first several Ali albums. If you’re going to have influences, there are few finer ones to have, but Dust also puts his own spin on things lyrically and flow wise. The guest verse from Mac Lethal is great because of course it is, he’s one of the GOATS of underground rap, and then add some classic scratching over a hook to take us out? Like we said, the good shit.
