Riding high off their triumphant return via the absolutely essential Ohms album, Deftones have announced White Pony / Black Stallion, a 20th anniversary reimagining of their watershed album White Pony. Featuring remixes by the likes of DJ Shadow, Robert Smith of The Cure, Phantogram and more, Black Stallion will drop December 11th, and is available for pre-order here. The first single, the Purity Ring remix of “Knife Prty” shows just how well Deftones’ spacious and genre blending sound lends itself to dramatic reinterpretation. This also gives us an excuse to post what is possibly our favorite YouTube mashup of all time: “Toxic But It’s Change (In The House of Flies) by William Maranci.
Rearview Mirror – Aaron Distler
Rearview Mirror is our annual look back at the year in music from our friends in and around the business. Musicians, managers, roadies, superfans, bloggers etc..
This recap comes from Aaron Distler, drummer for Heypenny, Kyle Andrews and Madi Diaz and details a year where he stopped caring about the hottest new music because he was too busy making his own.
Tuesday Tip-Off: Self-Help Songbook Volume 2: Not Quite Real
Today’s tip-off is the latest from singer-songwriter Andy Goheen’s downtrodden yet whimsically imperfect Americana project Sticky & The Bs
Atlas Mix – Volume 5 – America
We’re doing a cool little thing with The Atlas, our local whiskey and skeeball joint. Once a month we’re slipping a mix into their jukebox with a series we’re calling An Atlas Themed Mix (For An Atlas Themed Bar).
Volume 5 is themed around America, and we planned on posting this on the 4th of July for complete synchronicity, but we were partying and forgot. Check out our American Music below.
This Day in Music History – Jon Hancuff on Ian Curtis
It was on this day in 1980 that Ian Curtis, lead singer and lyricist of the British group Joy Division, committed suicide. The biggest Joy Division fan we know is local comedian Jon Hancuff (perhaps proving the old adage that all comedians are tortured souls inside?) so we asked him to write about what Curtis meant to him.
Sound as Vision – Ghost in the Machine
This very cool flikr set by artist Erika Iris Simmons was brought to our attention today, and we’re spreading the love. For our younger readers, the above is a cassette tape which was a medium for hearing music back when huffing freon and rocking out and jumping railroad tracks was something that the kids did. Golden times indeed.
Check it out below for some of our other favorites from Erika’s work. We more or less just picked the musical artists we dig the most as a way to whittle it down, because all of her work is amazing.
