Tuesday Tip-Off: Kelly Marie

Oh great. Another artist here to make us feel bad about how unproductive we were during lockdown. Sure, we laid around watching reruns of The Office, but did we write an entire album inspired by it? No, no we did not. Kelly Marie did though, and if the lead single “Timing Right” is any indication she pulled off the neat trick of taking this out of the box idea and turning it into perfect indie pop that stands on its own. Wisely, she at no point name drops Jim and Pam in the track which helps the song exist in its own space, but if you are a fan of the series almost every line is a reference to pivotal scenes in the characters will they / won’t they dynamic in the early seasons. While we know these don’t qualify as easter eggs in the same way we think of those in movies and tv shows, but it feels similar which is a fun addition. It’s a testament to Marie’s writing that she can play both sides, fan service and an independently legitimate pop song, but can she sustain it for a full album of Office inspired songs? Will there be a song specifically about Kevin’s chili accident? We don’t know, but we’re excited to find out.
